Kiehl’s To Help Launch the Smithsonian’s Cosmetics and Personal Care Digitation Project

The brand will donate 11 products to the National Museum of American History.

Kiehl’s Since 1851 is once again partnering with The Smithsonian, to support and help launch the the National Museum of American History’s Cosmetics and Perosnal Care Collections Digitization Project.

Soon, everyone will have access to the collection online, after museum experts photograph its extensive collection of cosmetic and personal care products – and preserving a bit of beauty history. The collection also shows how the American consumers’ perception of beauty has changed thorughout history. 

Kiehl’s is adding 11 products to the collection, which already has nearly 100 of the brand’s products, including some of its original 19th century herbal formulas.

A museum specialist will identify, photograph and provide descriptive information for the cosmetic and personal care objects collection on the Web. The project will allow the museum’s collection of cosmetics and personal care products to be accessed online for education and research around the world. Digitization initiatives of this type are a priority for all Smithsonian museums and research centers.

More About the Collection

The museum’s Division of Medicine and Science documents the advances and changes made in health and wellness throughout American history. It has approximately 90,000 artifacts, including a collection of 2,000 personal care and beauty products.

This collection, in particular, highlights the interplay between medicinal and cosmetic products and documents America’s ever-changing conceptions of health, beauty and well-being.
